International symposium & edited book
In Spring 2002, the International Peace Academy (New York) and the United Nations University (Tokyo) joined CERI to launch an international call for contributions in order to enlarge the exchanges on post-mass crime issues.
A systematic, geographically and gender-balanced selection of contributors was made, with a specific effort to include contributors with local experience.
An international symposium was organized in New York in June 2003, dealing with different aspects of how best to approach rehabilitation of post-mass crime societies. The meeting examined the impact on individuals, society at large, and the organizations involved in providing assistance in the post-conflict phase. The intention was to bring together political scientists, sociologists, historians, anthropologists, lawyers and psychiatrists in an effort to offer a trans-disciplinary examination of how mass crime is, and should be, addressed in post conflict peace- and society-building. Since 2003, Swisspeace (Bern) has joined the effort, and the project team has further discussed, commented, improved, and completed their respective contributions to the forthcoming book. Most of the contributors are experienced scholars as well as practitioners. The aim is to bring together the various disciplines that address mass crime in a manner that mirrors the multifaceted experiences of those affected by mass crimes.
The volume has been published in 2006 by the United Nations University Press, under the title:
After Mass Crime:
The Challenges of Rebuilding States and Communities
Edited by Béatrice Pouligny, Simon Chesterman, and Albrecht Schnabel
